SHEDDING KILOS THE DESI WAY: HOW INTERMITTENT FASTING IS TAKING INDIA BY STORM

For many years, we Indians have been battling #weightloss issues. From fad diets to rigorous gym routines, the search for a viable solution has been ongoing. But over the last few years, a new wave of healthy living has emerged, and surprisingly, it's a practice with ancient roots – intermittent fasting (IF). The cyclical eating pattern, where you alternate between fasting and eating windows, is gaining traction due to its potential health benefits and weight management properties.

The Ayurvedic Connection: A Natural Fit for India

The beauty of IF for Indians is in its natural synergy with our cultural practices. #Ayurveda, India's traditional medicine system, emphasizes the importance of agni (digestive fire) and recommends a light breakfast followed by a larger midday meal. This inadvertently creates a natural fasting window, making IF an easier adaptation for many.

Success Stories: From Actors to Entrepreneurs, IF is Taking Over

The effectiveness of IF is resonating with prominent figures across India. The idea of going ahead with this article came to me when I saw Actor R Madhavan’s interview with Kamiya Jani (Curly Tails), wherein he mentioned that after gaining weight for his directorial venture, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, he shed a significant amount (21 kgs) in just three weeks through intermittent fasting. His approach focused on #cleaneating, stopping meals by 6:45 pm, and prioritizing sleep – all principles that resonate with Ayurvedic practices.

Bollywood diva Malaika Arora is a vocal advocate for IF, typically fasting for 16-18 hours and focusing on hydration during fasting periods. Similarly, Alia Bhatt's nutritionist revealed her impressive weight loss using a vegetarian version of intermittent fasting, often following the 16:8 method. This method aligns with focusing on mindful eating within Ayurvedic principles.

Beyond Actors: Can IF Work for Everyday People?

The answer is a resounding yes! Times Network The Times of India features stories of five regular people who achieved significant weight loss with intermittent fasting. Swostida Mohanty, a homemaker, lost 18 kilos by incorporating exercise during her fasting window and focusing on healthy meals during her eating window. This example demonstrates that IF can be adapted to busy lifestyles and doesn't require drastic changes to daily routines.

Similarly, investment banker Akash Sinha found success with IF. He followed the 16:8 method and noticed a significant improvement in his energy levels and overall health alongside weight loss. Accountant Nitya Sharma highlights the flexibility of IF – she started with a modified 14:10 window and gradually increased the fasting duration as she became comfortable. This showcases how IF can be tailored to individual preferences.

The Role of Exercise: Amplifying Weight Loss with Cardio and Weight Training

While intermittent fasting can significantly aid in weight loss, combining it with regular physical activity can enhance results. Cardio exercises like running or brisk walking increase calorie burn and improve cardiovascular health. Weight training, on the other hand, helps build muscle mass, which boosts metabolism and aids in more effective fat loss. Integrating both cardio and weight training into your routine can accelerate your weight loss journey, making it more sustainable and impactful.

Taking Charge of Your Health: Starting Your IF Journey

Intermittent fasting can be a powerful tool for weight loss, but it's crucial to consult a doctor before embarking on any new dietary regimen. Here are some tips to get started with an Indian-inspired IF journey:

  • Align with Ayurveda: Prioritize a light breakfast, perhaps incorporating fruits or a small portion of khichdi.

  • Embrace Traditional Wisdom: Emphasize home-cooked meals with fresh ingredients, minimizing processed foods.

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, buttermilk (chaas), or herbal teas throughout the day to stay hydrated during fasting periods.

  • Find Your IF Rhythm: Explore different fasting windows like 16:8 or 5:2 (fasting for 2 non-consecutive days) to see what works best for your lifestyle.

We need to understand that intermittent fasting is a lifestyle change, not a quick fix. By combining this practice with mindful eating principles inspired by Ayurveda, and incorporating regular cardio and weight training, we can embark on a weight loss journey that is both effective and culturally familiar.

After all, A HEALTHIER YOU IS A HAPPIER YOU!
